Shrinking thinking
Progress in eliminating shrinkage was highlighted by members of the ECR Europe Shrinkage
Project team. The problem – caused by theft, fraud and supply chain failures – is
estimated to cost around €4bn a year in Europe.
The team listed its objectives: appeal to CEOs and the people who shape their thinking,
highlight the holes in current thinking, promote the “sexiness of shrink” – demonstrating
why “this is the last free money on the table” and listing the opportunities for
retailers, raise awareness of the value of taking shrink seriously, offer new insights
and show latest research.
Case studies were given by retailers ICA and Ahold and by sportswear manufacturer
and retailer Adidas, for whom a store project in nine countries had led to a 66
per cent reduction in shrinkage and a 10-15 per cent improvement in profit margin.
